Kimaranzara Cyanya Cooperative is a community-led maize farming group in Karongi District that brings smallholder farmers together to boost productivity, income, and food security. Members practice improved agronomy timely land preparation, use of certified seeds, row planting, balanced fertilization and integrated pest management while sharing tools and labour through collective work days. The cooperative runs regular training sessions on post-harvest handling, storage and basic bookkeeping, and organizes bulk input purchases and access to credit to reduce costs. At harvest the group pools maize for quality grading, storage in communal granaries and coordinated sales to local markets and traders, which increases bargaining power and stabilizes prices. Women and youth play active roles in leadership and value-adding activities like shelling and local milling. With transparent governance and a focus on sustainable practices, Kimaranzara Cyanya improves members’ resilience, raises household incomes, and strengthens Karongi’s local maize value chain.
