COOPOUMU Cooperative is a vibrant farmers’ organization based in Karongi District, bringing together smallholder producers who grow a variety of vegetables and fruits for both local and regional markets. The cooperative focuses on crops such as tomatoes, cabbages, carrots, onions, passion fruits, bananas, and other seasonal produce. Members apply good agricultural practices, including proper land preparation, use of improved seeds, irrigation where possible, and integrated pest management to maintain high-quality production throughout the year.
COOPOUMU strengthens its members through training in modern horticultural techniques, post-harvest handling, and business skills. By aggregating harvests, the cooperative ensures consistent supply, reduces losses, and negotiates better market prices with traders, hotels, and urban buyers. The cooperative also promotes sustainable farming, encouraging the use of organic manure and environmentally friendly practices.
