Macadamia nuts are becoming an important crop in Rwanda and are probably the fastest growing crop industry in the country.
Rwanda is one of the lowest producers of macadamia nuts in the world, after Australia (where they originate), South Africa, Kenya, Hawaii and the other major producers in the world.
Walnuts are a valuable industrial crop. Only two species, namely M. integrifolia and M. tetraphylla, are of commercial importance. Macadamia takes about five years to produce nuts and a good tree can produce nuts for 100 years.
The trees require a warm subtropical climate without too much humidity. In Rwanda, almost all parts of the country are ideal areas. Macadamias are now widely used in the confectionery, baking, ice cream and snack industries. Macadamia oil is high in monounsaturated fats
